The inks came out pretty much how I pictured from the begining, but what a pain in the ass it was, I really dont know if ill undertake this much detail in one peice ever again, Literally almost 40 hrs in the inking alone, also actual size is 24 x 36, boy was that a dumb move :slap:

Done for a band, the dragon was originally drawn by r. matthews, and this group got his permission to duplicate it for their cd cover. Apparently they wanted it in a different context, I cant say who its for, but you will know soon enough, the rest of the piece was all me.

Those Wolverine drawings are awesome. I really like the Spidey/Venom sketch as well. The Shi piece is rather well rendered too. Alot of other really nice stuff but those are the ones that really pop out in my mind. Keep it going, you've got some talent!

you've got some amazing talent man. I loved a good chunk of these pictures. The ones where you just did random peoples faces and things like that showed a lot of attention to facial details. that's good. Also the wolverine captures his personality wonderfully. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Anti-Crest, Im glad that you enjoyed a lot of these. Some are commissions, but most are just random musings for study. Especially faces, Im a little obsessed when it comes to that. Im Diggin the direction with the wolverine stuff, and Ill keep refining that, But its cool you think im capturing him, better wolvie stuff ahead, my friend. Any hoo heres one that wound up on the cutting room floor, actual size is 17 x 22, and only about 1/2 of the intended content was added, thats why theres so much dead space:)

Sullen - This graphic novel should be out in the next 8 - 12 months, this is just a piece inspired by a friend, who was gracious enough to let me use her image for this. Its one of my more "artsy" endeavors...but the story is from the heart, so we'll see if it sticks , again, nothing more than a rough sketch at this point:)

Hey Thanks Mr Tidwell, I appreciate the look, bro. Yeah these were actually done just to develop this paint technique. I did the pencils, inks, and the lions share of the coloring on both. Pence did some of the finishes, but like I said we we putting our heads together for a finished style for all our stuff, and now we both color like this almost identically:) Its a very simple technique actually, Its quite surprising the results you can achieve with just a few layers.

hey Dean, Thanks for chiming in, man.I appreciate the kindness amigo. Dont worry about the patience thing, it will come the more you practice. I used to really,realy struggle with that, I finally decide to look outside myself for that, and what I found was zen buddism. I recommend not only artists, but every one read at least2 books on the subject. Now Im not saying Im a buddhist or anything, but it really teaches you patience, visualization, and personal focus, which will make you a sucess in anything you want! especially this.

Tutorial? hmmm... I tell you what, if this thread goes to 200 replies, Ill post a tut. I should say, though, it is an easy process, but requires some advanced knowledge of photoshop. photoshop is all you need to achieve that look. You should also have a decent grasp on what layer masks and channels do. creating paths are helpful also, but not necessary for this coloring technique. Outside the software, have a good grasp on lighting, but I can give shortcuts on that as well.....So 200 , thats only 70 more posts, and ill match every post with art,and meet you half way, so thats only like 35 more, childs play:) Plus I need some time to throw one together. Hows that sound?

I like your advice about Buddhism. Not that I'd become a Buddhist either, but in regular life, when things get hairy, I've become very good at meditation, deep breathing, etc. I guess I just haven't applied that to this kind of art. I can do it when I'm painting, though. That's different.

With Photoshop, I'm kinda stalled at just using the brushes and smudge tool on a layer set at "multiply." Then I do glowy stuff with a "lighten" or "screen" layer. That's about it for effects for me. I've learned that the lens flare is unpopular. That's why I was astounded that you said it was so easy to create the colors on that Iron Man picture. It looks really complicated and time consuming to me.

Oh, its an easy process to follow, because its simplified, but it is extremley time consuming to get to that level of detail, make no mistake :) And if you need to mix it up in your coloring process, than do yourself a fovor, and go buyScott Kelby's "down and dirty tricks" for photoshop, It gives you a crash course on all those cool effects and techniques. the smudge tool can get you out of tight spots, but is basically boring and time consuming itself. The majority of upstart colorist have a hard time with color plotting, or scheming and entire piece, and the success of your finishes greatly rely on it, so heres a link that shortcuts the entire process for you.....

Chris Aldridge at Steel dolphin was instrumental in developing this coloring techinique..he has a very basic digital painting tutorial on his site that will immediatley freshen up your technique, so I suggest studying that in the meantime. Our version uses his process as the groundwork, and builds upon it .....

Pay particular attention to his brush settings, I cant emphasize this enough! And he does this in only 3 layers!

And keep in mind, to retain that "Iconic" look for comics, I suggest keeping a nice ink layer above all this coloring, it will tighten your rendering, and make you look like a superstar........... well almost :)

Honest, I have never even really tried to get hired on anywhere, Ive gotten offers from some high profile stuff, but always wanted to hone every angle of the craft before I made a move, now I feel fairly secure in my versatility and efficiency, because its just as easy to make a bad name{blowing deadlines} for yourself as well as a good name. Also Ive also been preoccupied with self publishing for most of the past decade :) But I think Im ready to apply to the big guys, and crank out high quality shit on a consistent basis:)

Jim Boyle ~ I do every thing as a rough thumbnail, when i feel Ive got the mojo going on a small level, I blow it up to 10 x 15, and lightbox from there...
Although when going to a realistic style like this I need more detail, so I have a habit of doing a series of tracing paper drawings and than lightbox or sheer trace in the final stages, thereby almost eliminating erasing completley, and keeping a very clean final board, although these pages arent a great indication of that, my scanner is scanning really weird right now...
